After graduating from Brown Aveda Institute in 1999, April Smith took her passion and exceptional talent to Mentor, Ohio to open her own studio, Salon Glow. With artistic and leadership skills under her belt, she created a cozy space for her staff to thrive and her customers to relax, feel at home, and feel fabulous.
We caught up with April in between clients to ask about her experience and success.

Why do you love what you do?
I love doing hair, and just making everyone feel happy and beautiful when they leave.We probably have the nicest bunch of humans that come in here every week. I love the people, I love all my clients, and I love all my staff. My girls inspire me a lot, they are so caring, it's awesome to be around them all.
How did your education impact your success?
The professionalism you learn going to Brown Aveda is completely different from other schools, night and day. It's the best education ever; the goal-setting that they give you, and the business class that Nancy Brown does in Beauty School was the most inspiring thing to me. Setting goals helps you see where you're at and where you want to be. I now do this with my staff every few months, making vision boards and sharing our goals so we can help each other.
Do you have advice for aspiring artists and business owners?
Make sure you're setting goals. Whether it's for being a hairdresser, owning a business, or anything you're going to do, visualizing where you want to be, writing them down, keeping track, and having someone hold you accountable for those goals is crucial.
